Suicide Prevention Month in Orlando – The Signs and What to Do
September 8, 2025
September is Suicide Prevention Month—an important time to reflect on the staggering toll suicide takes on individuals, families, and our communities. In Florida alone, there is an average of 287 suicide deaths each month, and the suicide rate among our veterans is 2.6 times higher than the general population. Even more heart-wrenching, Florida ranks #8 in the nation for teen suicides. These numbers are not just statistics—they are lives cut tragically short.
We must remain vigilant, not only for ourselves but for those around us. Signs of serious depression or suicidal thoughts can manifest in various ways. If you or someone you know is experiencing any of the following symptoms, it’s important to take action:
- Withdrawal from friends, family, and activities
- Sudden changes in mood, such as extreme sadness or anger
- Expressing feelings of hopelessness or being a burden to others
- Giving away personal possessions or saying goodbye to loved ones
- Dramatic changes in sleeping or eating patterns
These signs are a call to action. Sometimes, just showing up for someone—offering a listening ear or lending support—can save a life. Here are a few ways we can step in:
- Be Present: Often, just being there for someone makes all the difference. Sit with them, check in regularly, and offer non-judgmental support.
- Ask the Hard Questions: It can be difficult, but asking, “Are you thinking about suicide?” can open a door to necessary conversations.
- Guide Them to Resources: If someone is struggling, connect them to professional help. Encourage them to text or call 988, the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline available 24/7 for anyone in distress.
